The Wolfenstein series is a long-running game franchise set in World War II begun by Silas Warner of Muse Software in 1981 with Castle Wolfenstein. In 1992 the trademark was taken over by id Software for Wolfenstein 3D and prequel Spear of Destiny, while introducing protagonist B.J. Blazkowicz and more science fiction and supernatural motifs. Later games have been developed by FormGen Corporation, Gray Matter Studios, Splash Damage, Raven Software, and most recently by MachineGames while adopting further alternate history themes.
