The Wolfenstein 3D engine was created by id Software for their 1992 game Wolfenstein 3D published by Apogee Software using raycasting, following earlier first-person forays with the flatshaded Hovertank 3D and texture mapped Catacomb 3D for Softdisk in 1991. It was subsequently licensed to other developers, such as FormGen Corporation, Capstone Software, JAM Productions, and Wisdom Tree, and modified into the Raven engine. It has been nicknamed as id Tech 0 following the demarcation of the id Tech engines, properly established with the Doom engine. The source code to Wolfenstein 3D was released in 1995, Rise of the Triad in 2002, Blake Stone: Planet Strike in 2013, and Hovertank 3D and Catacomb 3D in 2014. Super 3D Noah's Ark was reverse engineered onto the ECWolf source port in 2014. The Capstone games remain closed source, unlike their later Build engine counterparts.
