Valve Software is an American video game developer, publisher and distributor, best known for the Steam digital distribution service, the Steam Deck handheld game console, as well as the GoldSrc and Source engines used in franchises such as Half-Life, Portal, Left 4 Dead, Team Fortress, and Counter-Strike. It is a private company, with the controlling stake owned by founder Gabe Newell, formerly of Microsoft.
