
The Unreal engine was created by Epic Games for their 1998 release Unreal and then licensed to other developers. It features its own custom level creation tool called UnrealEd.

Deus Ex from Ion Storm was published in 2000 by Eidos Interactive. After using the engine in the third-person action game Rune in 2000, and Dead Man's Hand in 2004 using Unreal Engine 2, developer Human Head Studios would finish 3D Realms' Prey on the id Tech 4 engine in 2006. The former DreamWorks Interactive developed Clive Barker's Undying in 2001. Rage Games (Scotland) used the engine in the game Mobile Forces, while Kamehan Studios developed Tactical Ops: Assault on Terror published by MicroProse, both in 2002.
Meanwhile, after switching over from the Quake II engine in 1998, and after well over a decade of further development, a direct sequel to Duke Nukem 3D was released in 2011 called Duke Nukem Forever using a heavily modified incarnation of the original Unreal engine. Earlier, the game Postal 2 had used a highly derived version known as UE 1.5, with features back-ported from Unreal Engine 2.
