Unreal

Unreal was released by Epic Games in 1998 utilizing the Unreal engine - the technology was almost immediately licensed to other developers and was eventually destined to overshadow id Software's venerable id Tech series of engines.

Story[]

The startship Vortex Rikers was en route to deliver convicted criminals to an off-world prison, when it was pulled to an uncharted planet and forced to crash-land. Prisoner 849 wakes up after the impact and finds herself alone, as all around her are dead or critically wounded. Leaving the wreckage, and using an universal translating device, she finds that she is in planet Na Pali. The native Nali were enslaved by the Skaarj, a brutish but technologically advanced reptilian race who want to steal all of their tarydium, a highly energetic mineral.

(Note: the protagonist can be chosen from various male or female models. However, since the "Player Setup" menu is separate from the "New Game" menu, players rarely bother changing it from the default "Gina". Consequently, the fanbase widely regards her as the canonical hero. Unreal's co-creator James Schmalz has also confirmed that the protagonist is a female.)
