Star Wars: Dark Forces is a first-person shooter developed and published by LucasArts in 1995 based on the Star Wars franchise set in the Star Wars Legends continuity (then known as the Expanded Universe). It used their proprietary Jedi game engine and inaugurated the Dark Forces series introducing mercenary Kyle Katarn and pilot Jan Ors. Although moddable, it had no official add-ons, while Outlaws did reuse the engine in 1997.
A remastered version was released by Nightdive Studios in 2024, with a fan source port called the Force Engine released in 2022. A sequel called Star Wars Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II was released in 1997 using the Sith engine.
Plot[]
Star Wars: Dark Forces is part of the Star Wars Expanded Universe, set between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back. Players take on the role of Kyle Katarn, a mercenary and former Imperial officer who becomes a Rebel agent. The story begins with Katarn stealing the Death Star plans, a plot point later replaced in canon by Rogue One. From there, the main narrative focuses on stopping the Empire’s Dark Trooper Project, an experimental program to create advanced battle droids and powered exoskeletons. Central to this conflict is General Mohc, the mastermind behind the Dark Troopers and one of the game’s primary villains.
Gameplay[]
A first-person shooter inspired by Doom but with significant enhancements for its time:
- Looking up and down (not just horizontal aiming).
- Jumping and crouching, adding verticality and exploration.
- Environmental puzzles and platforming.
- Complex multi-level maps, often requiring backtracking and exploration.
Combat[]
- Blaster-based gunplay: Most combat revolves around Star Wars blasters and heavy weapons, each with unique fire rates, spread, and damage.
- Varied enemies: Players face stormtroopers, officers, droids, bounty hunters, and the powerful Dark Troopers, each requiring different tactics.
- Movement in combat: The game introduced jumping, crouching, and vertical aiming, allowing players to dodge fire, climb platforms, and shoot enemies above or below.
- Resource management: Ammo, health packs, and shield units are limited, forcing players to balance aggression with exploration.
- No lightsaber yet: Unlike the sequels, Kyle relies entirely on firearms and explosives in this first entry.
Missions[]
- Secret Base: Kyle Katarn infiltrates an Imperial base on Danuta to steal the Death Star plans.
- Talay (Tak Base): Investigate the remains of a Rebel base destroyed by Dark Troopers.
- Anoat City: Urban mission where Kyle must locate and capture an Imperial officer.
- Research Facility: Break into an Imperial facility to learn more about the Dark Trooper Project.
- Gromas Mines: Destroy mines that supply Phrik, the alloy used for Dark Trooper armor.
- Detention Center: Rescue Rebel agent Crix Madine from Imperial imprisonment.
- Ramsees Hed: Sabotage an Imperial fuel station on the planet Ramsees Hed.
- Robotics Facility: Infiltrate the factory producing Dark Trooper components.
- Nar Shaddaa: Search for clues in the smugglers’ moon; includes heavy enemy presence.
- Jabba’s Ship: Escape Jabba the Hutt’s yacht after being captured.
- Imperial City: A daring raid on Coruscant, the Imperial capital, to gather intel.
- Fuel Station: Sabotage a massive orbital fuel depot.
- The Executor: Board Darth Vader’s flagship Super Star Destroyer.
- The Arc Hammer: Final mission - infiltrate and destroy the Arc Hammer, production site of the Dark Troopers, culminating in a battle against General Mohc.
Weapons[]
- Bryar Pistol (Kyle’s signature sidearm, unique to the game/series).
- E-11 Stormtrooper Blaster Rifle
- Repeater Cannon
- Thermal Detonators
- Mortar Gun
- Fusion Cutter
- Concussion Rifle
- Each weapon had limited ammo, requiring careful resource management.
Enemies[]
- Stormtroopers – The most common enemy; armed with E-11 blasters, they attack in groups and form the backbone of Imperial forces.
- Imperial Officers – Command personnel, usually with higher accuracy than stormtroopers; some carry keycards needed for progression.
- Imperial Commandos – Better trained and tougher than stormtroopers, they wield rapid-fire weapons and can inflict heavy damage quickly.
- Gamorrean Guards – Melee-only brutes often found in Jabba’s service, attacking with axes; slow but very strong.
- Rodians – Quick-shooting mercenaries and smugglers, frequently armed with blaster pistols.
- Grans – Alien thugs that throw thermal detonators, often encountered in Nar Shaddaa missions.
- Probe Droids – Floating droids that fire energy bolts and explode when destroyed, damaging anything nearby.
- IT-O Interrogation Droids – Floating Imperial droids armed with stingers or shock weapons; weaker but dangerous in numbers.
- Remote Droids – Small, hovering droids that fire weak but persistent blaster bolts.
- Sentry Droids – Larger combat droids armed with blasters; tougher than probe droids and often stationed in Imperial facilities.
- Turrets – Automated defense systems mounted to walls or ceilings, firing rapidly when players enter their line of sight.
- Swamp Creatures – Hostile wildlife encountered in some missions, attacking with melee strikes.
- Bounty Hunters – Includes alien mercenaries like Trandoshans and other hired guns working against the Rebels, usually well-armed.
- Dark Trooper (Phase I) – The earliest prototype; a skeletal droid armed with a vibroblade for melee attacks.
- Dark Trooper (Phase II) – Fully armored exoskeleton wielding a powerful assault cannon, resilient and dangerous.
- Dark Trooper (Phase III / General Mohc) – The final boss; General Mohc himself pilots a massive Dark Trooper battle suit aboard the Arc Hammer.
Technology and Engine[]
- Ran on the Jedi Engine, LucasArts’ in-house FPS engine (not related to the later Unreal-based “Jedi Academy” games).
- Allowed greater 3D flexibility than Doom’s engine, though not fully true 3D like Quake (no rooms directly above rooms).
- Featured full-motion video (FMV) cutscenes with actors and CGI, a major production effort at the time.
