Space Hulk was released by Electronic Arts in 1993, set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe, heavily sponsored by Games Workshop.
The game was played from a grid-based first-person perspective but was team based. You control a group of Space Marines in a series of mission moving through a derelict spaceship. You can see each marines view through cameras and you have an overhead map. It is also possible to switch to an overhead view to see where all your marines are.
A notable feature is the ability to freeze the action whilst the player checks what the other marines are doing and give orders. However there is only a limited number of 'freeze' seconds in any particular mission, preventing overuse.
A sequel entitled Space Hulk: Vengeance of the Blood Angels was released in 1995 through 1996, breaking free of the tile-by-tile nature of the original.
