90's First Person Shooters Wiki

The PlayStation was the first of the PlayStation line and the first game console by Sony Corporation, released on December 3, 1994 in Japan. It started life as a proposed CD-ROM add-on for the SNES. It was the best selling console of the fifth generation, the first to properly support 3D graphics, beating out the rival Nintendo 64 and easily trouncing the Sega Saturn and Atari Jaguar.

It was succeed by the PlayStation 2 on March 4, 2000 in Japan, which also topped the sales charts, with launch title TimeSplitters by ex-Rare developers Free Radical Design. Even with this, it faced competition from the new Microsoft Xbox and its popular launch title Halo: Combat Evolved by Bungie, and the continued pressure from the Nintendo GameCube and shooter Metroid Prime by ex-Iguana Entertainment developers Retro Studios.

A version of Killing Time was developed but never commercially released. A version of Blood was also once contemplated.

Although capable of full camera control, light gun and rail shooters such as Project Horned Owl, Elemental Gearbolt, Crypt Killer, Maximum Force, Chaos Control, Die Hard Trilogy, Area 51, Rescue Shot, Elemental Gearbolt, Omega Boost, Extreme Ghostbusters: The Ultimate Invasion, Judge Dredd, Jupiter Strike, Ghoul Panic, Lethal Enforcers, Lethal Enforcers II: Gun Fighters, Star Wars: Rebel Assault II: The Hidden Empire by LucasArts, Gunfighter: The Legend of Jesse James and the Crazy Chicken, Point Blank and Time Crisis series were nonetheless released for the system. Ports of American Laser Games releases such as Mad Dog McCree and Crime Patrol were considered for the system, but never released.
