Shadow Warrior (aka Shadow Warrior 3D) is a first-person shooter developed by 3D Realms and released in 1997 by GT Interactive, published in Europe by Eidos Interactive. It features a tongue-in-cheek ninja and samurai theme, continuing the parodic and juvenile overtones of Duke Nukem 3D. Similar to Blood, it used the Build engine enhanced with voxel graphics and room-over-room effects, as well as controllable vehicles and turrets. Initially released for MS-DOS, a port for Mac OS was released shortly after.
Three cancelled expansions exist for Shadow Warrior: Twin Dragon by Wylde Productions and Level Infinity, Wanton Destruction by Sunstorm Interactive, and Deadly Kiss by Simply Silly Software. All were later released freely online in 1998, 2005, and 2010, with Deadly Kiss only in a provisional state. Twin Dragon and Wanton Destruction were subsequently included in digital re-releases of the game, while a fan project exists to polish up Deadly Kiss to completion. A further collection of mods have been created for the game, as well as a selection of source ports following an April 1, 2005 source code release.
Following an updated re-release called Classic Redux in 2012 by General Arcade, a modernized reboot of the game was released in 2013 by Flying Wild Hog, starting a new series of games. All have been published by Devolver Digital.
