Redneck Rampage was developed Xatrix Entertainment using the Build engine (derived from Duke Nukem 3D) and released in 1997 by Interplay Entertainment as the first of the Redneck series. As the name suggests it features a redneck and hillbilly theme, with aliens invading the fictitious backcountry of Hickston, Arkansas in the American South. The soundtrack features various psychobilly artists, such as the late Mojo Nixon, who also voices in the game.

Initially released for MS-DOS, a port for Mac OS was released in 1999 by Logicware. An expansion pack called Redneck Rampage: Suckin' Grits on Route 66 was released in 1998 by Sunstorm Interactive. A sequel was also released in 1998 called Redneck Rampage Rides Again by Xatrix. A healthy collection of mods have been created for the game, such as the compilation sets Country Livin' and The Hickston Swamp, and the tweak mod Revision, as well as a selection of source ports.
