Epic Games is an American video game developer and publisher. It was previously known as Epic MegaGames and before that Potomac Computer Systems. It creates the Unreal engine initially for its Unreal series. It began as a shareware publisher and chief rival of Apogee Software, with titles such as ZZT, Jill of the Jungle, and Jazz Jackrabbit. It then became a major AAA producer of franchises Gears of War, Infinity Blade and Fortnite, and opened its own Epic Games Store in 2018 to compete with Valve Software's Steam service. It remains a private company, with a plurality of shares owned by founder Tim Sweeney, followed by Tencent and several other corporate shareholders.
