The Doom series was created by id Software using their Doom engine. Unlike other id franchises, every mainline game has been developed in-house, unless console spinoff Doom 64 by Midway Games is included. The games were described as a mixture of the science fiction of Aliens with the supernatural of Evil Dead II, with space marines fighting the demonic forces of hell unleashed by an amoral megacorporation.

id has subsequently continued the series with various incarnations based on descendants of the Quake engine known as id Tech. The classic Doom games and first reboot Doom 3 have had their source code released, leading to dozens of source ports, such as Chocolate Doom and GZDoom. Remastered versions of the classics have also been released by Nightdive Studuos in the 2020s using the KEX engine, succeeding numerous earlier commercial ports and re-releases.
Countless PWADs and megawads have been made by fans, marked by the Top 100 WADs of All Time by community site Doomworld in 2003 and the annual Cacowards thereafter.
