The FreeSpace series of space combat simulators are an official spin-off to Descent. The Descent engine was also notoriously used by Interplay Entertainment for the action role-playing game Descent to Undermountain in 1997. The rival games Radix: Beyond the Void from 1995 and Forsaken from 1998 are also broadly similar.

The 2018 game Overload by Revival Productions is a spiritual successor to Descent, as it has very similar gameplay and was made by members of the original team. Another game was started as a prequel to Descent, but was reverted to the generic name Ships That Fight Underground after a legal dispute.
