The Descent engine was created by Parallax Software for use in its 1996 game Descent. Along with XnGine and the Quake engine, it was one of the first true 3D polygonal engines, completed using portal rendering, and advertised for its full 360 degree viewing angles. It was later used in sequel Descent II in 1997 and rather notoriously the action role-playing game Descent to Undermountain also in 1997. A new Fusion Engine was created for Descent 3 in 1999 by Outrage Entertainment, that combined the interior portal engine of the original with a flight-simulator style terrain engine for outdoor environments.
