Counter-Strike is a first-person shooter, originally released as a fan-made mod for Half-Life in 1999. Its sudden popularity led Valve Software to acquire the rights to it and make it a standalone commercial product using its GoldSrc engine and published by Sierra On-Line, with several ports and sequels being released since.
