Bad Toys 1998 PC

Bad Toys 3D is a 1998 re-issue of the earlier Bad Toys from 1995. Both are 16-bit first-person shooters targeting Windows 3.1 using WinG (at a time when MS DOS was still the primary platform, with ports of Nitemare 3D and Doom being the only comparison, excluding the TimeGate demo), but the original version was only in black-and-white. Players take the role of a soldier sent into a toy factory that had recently been bought out by a defense company, only to find the toys have turned bad. Enemies include walking yellow smiley faces, floating fuzzbals, duck-like shotgunners, a flying wasp like creature, and a spring-entity armed with a plasma gun.

The game plays similar to Wolfenstein 3D with levels grid-based on a single plane (the game features an automap), although the weapons and other elements have more in common with Doom (a fist, pistol, shotgun, and plasma gun) The registered game features 25 levels culminating in a boss fight against a mecha toy (the original had 16 levels, and a one level demo release). Bad Toys was developed by Tibo Software, comprising of brothers Pavel and Libor Valach of Czechia, as well as a handful of additional level designers and testers. The opening theme was composed by J.T. Bob and is the only music in the game. Despite a seemingly family-friendly edge, with blood replaced with stars, the game features occasional topless posters on the walls.

As noted by PC Gamer in 2023, you can still buy the game from Tibo Software's website for $9.95. The game was included on the cover disc of the 33rd issue of the Czech magazine Score from September 1996, the Power Pack 12 compilation by Magicom Multimedia alongside In Pursuit of Greed also in 1996, as well as the 300 Arcade Games compilation by Cosmi Corporation in 2000. The game was also listed by PC Update in November 1996, described by PC Игры in October 2004, and mentioned by Games Industry in 2006.
